From clay to mug

This is how a mug is made, in six stages. In class you go through the same stages yourself.

  1. A lump of wedged clay on the wheel.

    Prepare the clay

You wedge the clay into a firm ball to push out air bubbles.

  2. Hands centring the clay on the wheel and opening it.

    Centre and open

On the wheel you centre the clay, then open it with your thumbs.

  3. Hands pulling up a wet clay cylinder on the wheel.

    Pull the walls

You raise the walls into a cylinder, a little at a time.

  4. Leather-hard mugs with handles, drying on a radiator.

    Trim and add a handle

When the mug is leather-hard, you trim the base and attach a handle.

  5. A mug after the first firing, pale and matt.

    First firing

The dry mug goes into the kiln once. It comes out pale and porous, ready for glaze.

  6. A finished mug with a glossy deep blue glaze.

    Glaze and second firing

You choose a glaze. A second firing at about 1,240 °C makes the mug hard and watertight.

In class you make your own, step by step. See the classes

Mugs and plates

Everything here is made in the studio, in small batches.

The studio: the kiln and a trolley of plates.

The studio

A small room in Porto with six wheels, two long tables and one kiln.
